The way I've done this in the past is to create a unique file with a distinctive name that won't match anything on any other host and place it in my shared folder. Then I get my friend to search for that file. After they get it in the results they can browse me as a host and grab the files I wanted them to have.

If it's just one file you want to share with them, simply name it something unique and tell them what to search for.
