A cookie is a small file placed on your computer by many sites. They use it to identify you when you revisit their site. It is something you may or may not want. For example if you use, say, Yahoo for your home page and have it personalized Yahoo identifies you from a cookie when you sign on and gives you your personalized page.

Other sites use them without your permission to track your visits.
