Salut Gazza, of course the memory problem would affect other apps, but that was a guess on my part
Now it is highly probable SP2 is the cause. I've seen some apps starting slow with SP2 on particular hardwares. The best way to figure it all is to uninstall SP2 in add/remove programs then test LW. You can always reinstall SP2 afterwards.
