I think the problem must be somewhere else. DNS is a basic item for internet, internet access without DNS is impossible... at least in a "norma enduser" environment. Even on standard firewalls DNS works, so when you have a working internet access (aka http), you can be sure the DNS is working too.

PS: While playing around with DNS today (stupid windows shares won't connect to //IP/share)... I thought about IP coded hostchaches in Xolox. Maybe you wanted to speed Xolox startup? If the cached hostslist doesn't provide enough speed for connection to gnutella network, store the resolved host cache IPs together with the hostnames in a 'hostcaches.txt'. Use the IPs for fast startup and update the IPs from the names whenever they changed. Just my 0.02 Euro.
