I have had the same thing happent to me. What I realised is that the songs that wouldn't play in WMP, were m4a file types not mp3. Not sure why WMP wouldn't play them for sure, but when I checked to make sure it was mp3 that I was d/ling they worked fine. 
There are other players out there that don't seem to have a problem with the m4a file format. You can "google" for them. Several are free. 
You can also do a search(upper right) for - music quality - 
That will also give you some insight on what to look for.
