Traditionally, .z is used for files compressed with a Unix utility. I read this before, but I found it here also:

pack is the name of a program/command commonly found on Unix systems. I thought WinZip handled all common compression schemes, but maybe not this one. In the past I was able to find all kinds of freeware for Windows that would decompress anything. Just look for something that handles
packed files.
