In the PC Exchange control panel window you'll find a list of formats in alphabetical order. Look for mp3 & then select iTunes as the program to open it. If mp3 is not listed then you can add it manually & give an example, then choose iTunes to open it. Once it's selected there should be a button called open with ...
Note mp3 'might' be listed as mpeg audio or MPG3.
(The creator code/nickname for iTunes is hook.)
There was a utility called ? iTunes something lol but it's no longer made. All you needed to do was drag & drop an mp3 onto it & it would change the file's properties & icon to that of iTunes.

By the way, iTunes cannot import all mp3 audio formats. Please make a note of iTunes not import all formats & Audion:
