Tough question. Actually Java for mac is not as efficient in some ways as java for windows. There's an issue with memory use of Java which includes both real RAM & virtual memory (VM) use (all OSX apps use VM.) Actually the 4.8 LW uses much less RAM than the previous versions did. But it still uses considerable VM. It also utilises considerable cpu power. WHich is why we need to be careful how we use it. Unfortunately mac is very slow to update to Java 1.5 (still using 1.4.2)
LW is presently working on a more efficient use of Java which uses considerable less memory & cpu. That will apparently be in a not too distant in the future release. See
