You should either ask your friend for his email address, or really, just download the updated free version.

The Pro version is good for 6 months of updates, so if you have a much older version, the update time has probably expired anyway.

So, try the free, and if you want to encourage the work the developers and volunteers have done, think about supporting them by getting your own subscription to the Pro version.
