Windows Media Player is not the only software in town. I recommend you download and try out WinAmp, which is absolutely free and can handle most of the media files you want to play.

They have a free version, and a premium version. Obviously, you should try out the free item before deciding to buy.

WinAmp can handle about 90% of the multimedia files you want to play, both audio and video.

If you want to tinker with your pictures or icons or movies, then I suggest IrfanView, another free program that you can download from http://www.irfanview.com/
