Probably due to not having the correct CODECs which you can get from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/
Also get yourself a backup player like VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (choose nearest mirror site)
The only other reason I can think of is that your normal video player has stopped being the default.
