It is quite possible that you are downloading fake files, planted by the RIAA, or files loaded with malware, again planted (I feel) by the RIAA.
Also, the reason why WMP can't play certain files is that it may not have the right codec installed, this you can check by the error messages you get.

There is no "site" to check, the P2P network is composed of thousands of individually owned PCs (like the ones you and I own), there is no central server.
Since you say your PC is virus free, is it also ad and spyware free? In other words do you run Ad-Aware and Spybot to get this crap off your machine?
Finally, I believe that the RIAA has started a campaign to destroy the network with fake files, worms, viruses and whatever else they can get their paid cronies to throw at us, they have certainly made enough threats.
If you keep your PC protected you will be able to continue using the network.
