Yeah, we've seriously toyed around with the idea of distributed downloads before. I agree it's a really neat idea with a lot of potential -- it could easily get into doing far more cooperative distriubtion/CPU cycle-sharing-type stuff at some point.
We did not pursue this basically because we were too busy incorporating new features into the program, and we did not foresee at the time that financing would be an issue for us this soon. The major problem with this approach is that people who have never used LimeWire cannot get it this way. It also would be a bit tricky for the non-tech-savvy. On another level, we didn't want to force users to keep the installer on their systems just in terms of hard-drive space, although we might give it some more thought.
We definitely understand everyone's frustrations with the bundled software, but we did not see too many other options (other than losing programmers...) for meeting our current financial needs. We hope that it is a temporary situation and that we start selling our server software by the thousands, but for the time being we have to stick with the bundles and ads out of necessity.
