First of all, let me say the problem is resolved!

With my wife's iPod connected to my computer, I found the option of manually updating iPods (Edit\Preferences). They warn you that when this is selected, you will have to manually eject the iPod. Not a big deal. It's OK. When I selected that button, I discovered that I was then able to take things from my library and move them to my wife's iPod.
