One step forward, one step back
I followed the first link to this:
"Go to 2nd on menu (may have a (V) after it) & scroll to bottom & select & you'll see english, select that. You WILL NEED to then close & re-open LW for it to take effect.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showt...;threadid=30485"
I followed this link and got this:
"select VIEW from the menu > select CHANGE LANGUAGE > select ENGLISH
hope this works.."
Then I followed the second link to a thread that complained about the page being in German. I picked up this post:
"You can also try going to LW's menu View-Change Language & choose your language"
All of this advice didn't help. With the page entirely in Finnish, I couldn't get anywhere as I can't read the language and couldn't find VIEW. I hadn't been able to put an English language page so I couldn't use that for guidance.
The first entry on what I had to believe was the toolbar listed the following:
Tiedocto Nayta Ikkuna Linkit Tyokalut Tuki
It might as well have been Greek.
I decided that LW had put something in my registry that was causing the language problem. I downloaded and ran a registry cleaning program. It asked me to select a language. Of course I selected English. In retrospect, it might have been best for me to have stopped at that point - but maybe not. I had the program scan the registry for problems. It found more than a few. I had them removed. For good measure I ran a scan for unnecessary files and removed what was found.
Then I went to Windows Explorer and removed all traces of LimeWire I could find. After that I went to the Internet to
www.limewire.com and downloaded LW 4.9.x. I saved the download and used Windows Add and Remove Programs to install it.
Then I ran LimeWire and saw....English!
Unfortunately, LimeWire wouldn't search. There was a window saying that LimeWire was connecting to the network and words to the effect of not to expect much. I got nothing at all. I had this exact same problem with my first download of LW 4.9.x. This was the subject of a thread I had started earlier.
At that time I was able to find a download of LW 4.8.1 and install it. All was as before. I could use LW again. I really should have left things alone, but no, I had to try LW 4.9.x again. That's when I got Finnish.
I'm pretty pissed off about this experience. I consider it to be entirely LW's fault - for contaminating my registry.
I think I'll try Kazaa or whatever.
