I went into Tools>options> then pissed about with things for a while - the only thing of significance was that I changed the upload speed to less than 100% maximum of my bandwidth, as I figured it was not allowing any bandwidth for downloads.

Cheers for your suggestions as it allowed me to mess within the tools section - hope this helps others!!

Oh by the way, my mate's copy of limewire pro didn't work, but i checked my bovered box and it was empty...
