Are you quite sure you do not have these multiple entries on iTunes also? For instance you can have an artist title with a space after it and this will file differently from the same name with no space after it.
Also are the different Artist entries duplicates or different songs? You can check for duplicate songs in iTunes at edit ... show duplicate songs.
