Being connected to a network is slightly different to be connected to the Internet, on a network you can see other peoples names and connections. On the internet, usually, peoples IDs and their computer names are protected from exposure by a firewall.
If a user does not have a firewall then it is possible to find out their computer name and, possibly, anything else on their hard drive.
I presume that you are either on an office or college network, either way networks primarily connect PCs together so that they can share information in your particular environment. Whereas the internet is about collecting information for yourself.
