The #(number) symbol is one of several different column headers at the top of the search results page. The actual number that appears under the "#" column indicates the number of users that have the file shown, ie: 2, 8, 26, 50, ect. In theory the higher the number the better chance of getting a good download, but it doesn't always work that way. There are a lot of spam and bad files on the network, you have to be patient and after a while you'll get to know whats good and whats trash
