I've had this problem for the last year ... since I've been using limewire, but only for a maximum of three minutes or so and that is after Lw has been running for several hours and doing a lot of work.
Btw the display stops responding but afaik uploads and downloads continue unnafffected.

What are your processor speed, ... Memory, ... and free space on your start up disk?
