The only way that I know of that LimeWire will slow down you computer is if you are sharing a large volume of files and when you first add them to your share folder it can take a long time to hash them. While LimeWire is in this process it can slow down your computer it takes a large amount of CPU and ram to do this process. But once this is complete all things return to normal.
The only other thing that will slow things down is miss configuring LimeWire. If you do not configure your bandwidth properly for your connection it will appear to slow down your computer, this is a misconception it isn't your computer that is slowing down it is the connection that is overloaded.
While I do not believe in not sharing there are some cases where I believe it is mildly acceptable. People in some areas have very slow connections 26K etc. And it can be difficult to download, share, and cruse the Internet at the same time. When I am on the road I get these connections allot of the time and it really is quite frustrating. But I still share I just don't share when I am cruising the Internet. When I am done cruising the net or answering questions in the forum I will start LimeWire/Frostwire and leave it running all night. Thus eliminating the problem.
