Whilst LW has been left unattended, it closes off a UP connection. Whilst you're away from the computer you don't need the extra connection. If you're not searching then this connection is not needed. It's refered to as idle mode. It's explained by one of the LW programmers here

The reason LW does this is it frees up UP slots to enable people to get connected. Once people are connected, they can move on.
Your previous version must have been fairly old then. You'll notice some differences in LW's behaviour then for other things also.
