Might be that your girlfriend used the Add/ Remove feature of the Control Panel to uninstall LW.
What I would try is, download the off-line installer of LW basic, uninstall the old JAVA, download the newer JRE off-line installer from here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

Then install first the Java, and afterwards try to install the LW client. Though I'm not sure whether that will solve your problem.....
