I am not a mac user but, in general, if you are happy with some software, i.e. it's stable, doesn't memory clash with other apps and has all the features you need, then there is no reason to update.

For example, I still use MS Word 97 because, out of all the features it has, I only use seven (and that is at a stretch). I use MS Word XP at work but I still only use those seven features. Therefore, since I will only ever use those seven features in an MS Word processor there is absolutely no reason why I should upgrade beyond MS Word 97 for my own personal use.

Back to LW, in general when the LW Org issues an upgrade it usually is worth getting but sometimes an unstable upgrade gets through. This has happened to me just once though, when LW Pro V4.9.28 was released. I found this particular upgrade unstable (crashed a lot), wiped out my previous LW settings (no other upgrade had ever done this before) and could no longer work with Peer Guardian, it saw PG as a firewall.

So the moral of the story is, if you like your current app and it's features then don't upgrade because not all upgrades are beneficial.

However, if you feel that an app can be improved and the developers have promised those improvements and features you want then it is worth taking the chance to upgrade.
