Default Internet preferences

Did your cable modem come with a specific installation program from your internet service provider? If so, it might be that the preferences regarding the file-types of downloaded files are changed. (This would also explain why your older music files are unchanged.) You can reset the settings using the Control Panel called "Internet", as always located in the Control Panels folder in the System folder. Here you can set the preferred "owner" of any mp3-file to be iTunes, Audion or whatever player you like.

Regarding the trouble you're having with opening the music files you've now already downloaded using cable, it might help to try to access the files using the 'Open' command from within, say, Audion, rather than by simply double-clicking the music file icons.

In some rare cases it's not possible to open the files in that manner. If so, you might have to manually change the files so called 'Creator' and 'Type' (which really is what all of the above is about, only the process is most often automatic). There's several programs around that can aid you with this task, the most commonly used probably being "File Buddy" by SkyTag Software , from where you can also download a demo and more info.
