I've never used winavi, but it might be that it can't handle some files properly. Since an avi can be one of many actual formats. AVI is like the outer shell, but what's inside can very greatly. That includes both audio & video. eg: some converters can't handle the audio if it's in mp3 format, or perhaps another format.
So unless there's an update on winavi that has improvements or can utilise codecs installed on your system, perhaps try another converter as a trial to see if it can handle the issue. Here's an example of one
