I was using limewire, and one day it simply wouldn't connect. As it happens, I had Norton Internet Security running, and it was not permitting javaw.exe to access the internet. I just changed the permissions under Internet Access Control. Even if you don't have Norton Internet Security, you may have something preventing javaw.exe from accessing the internet.
