RAM Hogging This is definitely a strange one. A couple of versions ago (somewhere around 2.0) I had trouble installing an upgrade. Since I already had Mac Runtime for Java 2.2.5 I went to the second download page and snagged the smaller version without the MRJ. As soon as I installed it I started experiencing obvious memory-related problems. Being a longtime Mac user I immediately cranked up the RAM allocation, but this does not solve this problem. On another thread someone suggested allocating 70MB of RAM, but that is ridiculous. Hell I can get the whole MS Office 2001 running fine with less than that! Not to mention that the problem here seems to be that the application is ignoring whatever RAM settings you have anyway. We used to call these rogue apps and I certainly will not miss them when I finally switch to OS-X.
BTW I'm running Limewire on a Powerbook G3 333 with 192MB RAM under OS 9.2. Despite reinstalling MRJ 2.2.5 twice and three successive versions of Limewire (including the current one), the app launches using about 40MB of RAM and just keeps gobbling it up till it crashes ... usually between 75 and 80 MB. If I'm lucky I can squeeze in a download or two before it's game over.
A few versions ago (the one with the different, nicer icon) Limewire was a model Java app ... it had a decent, competitive feature set and was very stable. Until this problem is fixed however, I will continue to use Morpheus under Virtual PC. If it's not fixed by the time Morpheus for Mac is released ... bye bye Limewire. |
