avi is a video format. Are you trying to play the file with WMP? Maybe you need codecs for the player. Have a look below for links to codec packs, I've used the XP Codec Pack for WMP. Or, you could try VLC player. It's free & has codecs already installed You'll find a link for download, plus more info below.
