It's a codecs issue....
Get the VLC media player it has all the codecs pre-installed and plays just about everything...(and it's free  ) VLC media player - Overview
If your running XP this codec pac will get your WMP up and working fine... Download XP Codec Pack 2.0.7.1 - XP Codec Pack is one of the most complete codec pack
