Default 2.2.1 Connection problem ("Gnutella OK" by telnet)

I just d/l'd an OS X client (2.2.1) for the first time and it installed with no problems. I am running X.1.3 and have installed the recent Java update. Running a 550 Ti with half a gig of RAM.

I am using a 56k modem connection and finding it impossible to maintain a connection. I ran the troubleshooting telnet connection and received the Gnutella OK response within a second or two so I assume that my ISP (which is a university btw) is not blocking.

When I have a look in the connection window I can see LW cycling through a variety of hosts and some seem to conncect (I see fluctuating numbers in the title bar at the top (up to 2bfiles/1Tb!)) but none of the connections "stay", it eventually discards these hosts and goes onto test others and the shared files drop back down to 0/0. The bandwidth indicator for each host seems to read 0/0 pretty consistently (although it will occasionally flicker showing a number > 0).

About the only host statistic that shows any number is the messages I/O which shows positive numbers for hosts that are listed as incoming or outgoing (e.g. I have one incoming and one outgoing host listed at 190/191 and rising at the moment with no files listed as being available). I've been running LW for about 2 hours currently.

Searches universally return no results regardless of what the files number indicator in the menu bar may read.

I've searched through the FAQs for something similar but haven't found anything helpful.

Any suggestions for what's going on?

As I mentioned I haven't run a LW X client before but I have run it (maybe a year ago) under OS 9 with success (using the same ISP) on another Ti.

TIA
