Yes this is supposed to only display previous searches.
Is your window looking like this:
http://phex.kouk.de/searchsc.htm

If not then your screen is not displayed completly. You should have a upper half where you can enter the search term and press a Search button.

What Java version are you using?
Type 'java -version' into a command prompt to find it out.
