Keep in mind many people don't have chat enabled. Some people use different gnutella programs that are not necessarily directly contactable via chat. Also some people leave LW running overnight or whilst they are at work or school, etc. or keep it in the background whilst they are working. So, if a chat invitation is not answered within a minimum time, it goes stale.
