Three reasons i can think of are:
1. your player is missing correct codecs to play the files properly.
2. If using LW's media player, then that might be the problem. Try playing with another player.
3. Some files out there are deliberately corrupt; see T3 Spammers; mp3 Bit-Rates Versus File Sizes (click on link)
