Strange VLC cannot play the files. Check also with MPlayer:

There are other codecs to try such as XviD, 3ivx, and those listed under QuickTime's 3rd party extra plug ins page in QT prefs.
WMP on mac is hopeless, always has been. See the note here about Mac OSX

Thanks, but sorry Xcom, the Windows XP codec pack does not apply to Mac OSX.
