keep the hell away from any raid arrays...they are not worth it unless you are going for extreme performance (like for audio use...in specific streaming samples for use in a sequencer)...and never use an array for an OS...its just not worth it....if the array goes south you are hosed...you will never get your data back...
keep to a size of less than 160GB (I prefer 120GB for an OS drive) and follow LOTR's advice re: partitioning...I take a 120GB drive and make the primary partion (where the OS will reside) and make it 30 GB...the second partition is the remainder...
for what its worth I've been using Western Digital drives for a long time...
