And with the aging code, some networking features that have changed since the release of your version of Gnucleus are no longer supported by other clients, which makes connecting to the networks more difficult...
To help you at least a bit: AFAIK, Gnucleus (GnucDNA 1.1.1.6) connects to more than one network. It certainly connects to Gnutella 1 and Gnutella 2. So which network does it not connect to anymore?
If you would like to have a decent application with the ability to use several networks, you may want to try out Shareaza. It connects to Gnutella, Gnutella 2 and eDonkey. Torrent downloads are also possible... And Shareaza is certainly better than Gnucleus and Frostwire (once you configurated it correctly; see
this install guide for how to do this).
