I don't know, but one thing is sure: Gnutella = Gnutella, but the gnutella access is not the gnutella access... very old clients use an other handshake than the actual ones, making it very difficult to connect.
Since I don't know gtk-Gnutella very well, I cannot say if this applies to your sittuation, so I could be 100% wrong.
