hmmmm...well, your HDD still might be functional...I had a computer fry once (30 seconds after turning it on for the first time) and it was the mother board that went...it took the power supply with it, but all other items were still intact...sure, lots of smoke, but various factors prevent any real fire...
if you still have it, then try and hook the HDD up to your new machine and see if it still works...and obviously, do this with the machine turned off and the the power supply's on off switch turned to off...its actually a good idea to leave it plugged in (remember, the on off switch is OFF) because this leaves the unit grounded....its still probably wise to use an anti static strap just in case...
