Always offline installations of Java are more reliable than the online installations .. which they unfortunately recommend. Offline installation is where you download the installer with all contents inside the installer. The online installer is where you download the basic installer program, then it makes calls out to the java site to download the contents of the installation. This online installation frequently results in problems with installations; incomplete/corrupt installations, data not reaching the installer in time or corrupt date across the internet.
Another issue, which may apply to you is that there are now 32 bit & 64 bit java installers depending on whether your computer uses 32 or 64 bit operating system.

If using an older operating system such as Windows 95/98, then you are limited to one of the earliest java 1.6 versions; Java 1.6_5
