Usually it would be x264 format video and either ac3 or aac format audio. VLC should play it or pretty much any codec pack installed will allow you to play it with e.g. WMP. Personally I prefer the Combined Community Codec Pack and MPC (included in the pack), but remember only 1 codec pack should be installed on a system at any given time.
