Indeed, a lot of good can be said about the EU. For that matter, one could say much good about any country or union of states.. (Property crime was almost unheard of when the Taliban ruled Afg.)
I've noticed that nobody protests like the french. Perhaps it's because the leaders remember their citizens' peculiar history of disposing of bad rulers. I wonder if the UK would be different if the populace were considered citizens, rather than subjects. (Funny, it seems that many among our elected treat US citizens as their subjects. I hope today to vote some of them out of office.)
