In our country at least, guns were outlawed for private use many years ago in 1996 with exceptions such as farmers. And an amnesty for people to hand in any guns their possessed. Now it is a mandatory jail term for possessing an unlicensed gun. I think it's 2 years but might be wrong.

Unlike the USA, Australia does not have major firearm producers who are always looking for a market for their product. As far as I know, these companies and the gun lobby have a very high profile and power of persuasion over the USA government.

If guns were outlawed and tighter control put upon the gun manufacturer companies distribution of weapons, then I suspect gun related fatalities would be dramatically reduced in the USA.
