Edit 2020-09-11 - LimeWire Setup LW5 has now replaced the fix mentioned below. Only applicable to LimeWire 5 and LPE. This fix does numerous things including getting LW ready to connect let alone start and without the need to run any scripts after installing. Most thanks go to
bigjx of the WireShare project. LimeWire Setup LW5
via MediaFire - End of edit note.
As many of you will know, LW 5 versions do not work directly with Java 7, so the workaround is using shortcuts.
Edit: May 5, 1965 Standard Microsoft leisure time: Ignore below, instead see post #3 further below. There is a dual Java fix combined with a connection fix.
Edit: March 11, 2013: I have created a dual installer depending on whether you have standard LPE or File_Girl'ls version installed. How will you know which option to use? If after installing LPE the shortcut says
LimeWire 5.6.2 then use the
Standard LPE option. If the shortcuts are simply named
LimeWire, then you have installed File_Girl's version of LPE and should choose the
File_Girl LPE option.
(Also the startup screens are different. In the following image the top one is standard LPE, lower one File_Girl's LPE in
this sample image.)
Only one issue I have found is if you are using Windows 7 and have File_Girl's version installed, you will end up with two Start Menu program listings for LW unless you choose
Desktop icon for All users. This is not a necessary choice, you can simply right-click the original listing from the Start Menu and choose Delete.
The LPE versions we have listed on the forum since December are already packaged with the Java shortcut fix installers and security installers so no need to use these ones. Although improvements have been made with these ones.
* LPE Shortcut creator for using with Java 7 installer (click on link). This has been tested with LPE on Windows 8, 7 and XP.
If you see an installer error message saying the folder already exists, simply click the Ignore button (I only saw this on Windows 7.) The shortcuts look the same as the regular LW shortcut and it will most likely replace your original LPE shortcut.
It was also tested with LW 5.4 (except the desktop shortcut says LW 5.6.2 but works fine, so can be used with any LW 5 version and you can rename the shortcut.)
Edit: I have created a version 2 of the installer to overcome a minor icon issue on particular Windows systems. Also added option to install desktop icon for only that account or all users. This was probably not necessary but might be helpful for some people.
If the original LW shortcuts anywhere still remain simply delete them. For start menu simply right-click and choose remove. Depends on particular Windows system whether the original stays or not after using the above installer. Both my Windows XP's behaved differently. - The latest installer should overcome such issues if you choose the correct version to install for.
If you ever wish to uninstall LimeWire, uninstall the LW-Java shortcuts first using the Add/Remove Control panel.
Edit March 2013: just discovered the original LPE uses
LimeWire 5.6.2 as a desktop shortcut whereas File_Girl's version uses
LimeWire as a shortcut.
The above installer is only needed if you are using Java 7, but does no harm if you are using any other Java version. Let me know if any issues.
* This installer should
not be used with LW 4. Besides, LW 4 does not have any problems with Java 7.
