I've noticed a few of the same things myself.
As poor as LW is at browsing hosts, there are some program clients that can disable being browsed. GTK, Phex, BearShare, Gnucleus from memory. I guess it's not really a level playing field when they can still browse other hosts.
I've noticed the Amazon hosts for a while but have no idea about their service or kinds of persons that use it, other than they offer a cloud service. It's my guess they are somewhat firewalled, but I might be wrong.
Someone else might have some advice on this topic?
