Like many Windows users, I had this error when I tried to install the 2.5 MB version of the client from CNET on my Win98 system.

What worked for me was downloading the 9.6 MB international version available here:

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download

Beats me why that would make a difference, but there you have it.
