Hits means that and incoming search resulted in your machine returning a result file from your file index.

For example

search = software ===> (your_machine) ===shared files = software.file / music.file / document.file
<==reply (I am sharing a file called software) = 1 hit for software

"This means in english that if you are sharing a file that matches and incoming query - either partially or completely

This file appears in the results window of the person executing the search.

hope this helps.
