On the upper right-hand-corner of this page click search and look for "problems opening files"
Read the threads posted on this subject.
A smiley face in the chat column means that the remote user has chat enabled and you can click on that icon to talk to the user during your transfer session. However, just because it is enabled doesn't mean that some one is sitting at the console--so make your comments specific so the person can read them when they return.
