7 minute rule -- the amazing, disappearing download running LimeWire 2.8.5 on a G4/400MHz with 512MB under OS 10.2.3
I've been trying for several weeks to download a number of large (80-400M) avi files. Most every morning when I turn the computer on, I'm connected to a specific host and start downloading 3 or 4 of the files at a very good transfer rate. The rate steadily falls, and within seven minutes (the maximum I've timed) all downloads have ceased and I'm back in an endless "requery" loop. Every morning the same story.
I don't think this is a bug so much as a basic design fault. Perhaps the new parcelled download philosophy is suitable to small mpgs, but it is totally useless for large files. Somehow the host sees the on-again/off-again download as faulty and times me out.
I've observed similar behavior with uploads from my library. Users with older versions of LimeWire or with other packages upload successfully (usually taking several hours to complete the large transfers). Users on LimeWire 2.8.5 almost never succeed. Most end with Transfer Interrrupted or are frozen in a 'complete' state.
I'd also like to add that it's a week since the holidays. I'm surprised and disappointed that not one of the LimeWire team has bothered to respond to any of the threads describing 2.8.5 problems.
