So you are using a pre 9 version of Mac OS. That make things a little more complicated. Basically you should try the following:
Make sure that they are mp3 files first by checking their file sizes individually. If a single one of them is for instance a 3 minutes or longer song then it should be about 3MB or larger in size. To check its file size do the following highlight the file and then from the File menu select Show Info>General info and in the window that appears look at how large Mac OS tells you that it is.
Then you could also just open up Quicktime and from the file menu select open new window then select from the file menu once again open new movie and select one of those mp3's and see if it will play.
The best option however is to get a proper mp3 player that will function in Mac OS 8.6 unfortunatelly there is none that is as good as iTunes but atleast there is some options available for instance:
